Tralee Bay Wetlands Eco and Activity Park set in the heart of the Tralee Bay Nature Reserve, was built with the aim of promoting and raising awareness of biodiversity and natural heritage to visitors and students alike.
Tralee Bay is an important area for biodiversity, a Natura 2000 site comprising a very diverse range of coastal habitats that are important both nationally and internationally, and here on our 9 hectare site we have created a microcosm of many of the different wetland habitats in Tralee Bay, from small braided river channels lined with willow to flooded meadows, reed beds and saltmarsh habitats.
Ecology Field Studies Modules are available and are suitable for Junior Certificate and also both Leaving Certificate Honours/Pass Biology Students. Our Ecology Field Trip Modules, which consist of wetland habitat studies, will fulfil all of the curriculum requirements of the Ecology modules from the Junior and Leaving Certificate Science and Biology courses, and given the value of wetlands for biodiversity and conservation and their huge global decline, will offer an important alternative to grassland and woodland habitat surveys.
Please see the module content details, duration and prices below or download our brochure on the right of this page.
Our courses are delivered from 10:30 am - 2:00 pm but we are happy to facilitate groups at later times if necessary. The duration of the Leaving Certificate Programme is 3.5 hours and 3 hours for the Junior Certificate Programme.
The above programme introduce students to the importance of studying ecology. They cover the mandatory requirements for practical ecology for the Junior and Leaving Certificare Syllabus and are excellent value at just €12 per student. These include time for a lunch break. Ballyseedy Cafe at Tralee Bay Wetlands is on site and offers a variety of lunch options and snacks. They can be contacted directly through our phone number regarding advance bookings for large groups. We also have a picnic area available for students to eat their own packed lunches.
In addition to the courses run specifically for the Junior and Leaving Certificates, the park will be delighted to work with individual schools to tailor classes or outings for students from other years.
All courses are run by the resident ecologists at the centre, graduates in Wildlife Biology from the Institute of Technology, Tralee. With extensive in teaching ecology at schools our ecologists will deliver the secondary level ecology curriculum in an interesting and relevant way.
